Looking ahead at 2018 for RIC design build

We’ve put a bow on 2017 and now it’s time to start planning for the year ahead.

2018 has some really exciting things in store and we wanted to give you a quick overview of what we’ll be working on, learning, reading and enjoying over the next year.

New Projects

We are super excited about the projects that are already underway for 2018. They include additions, whole-house remodels and room updates.

Here’s a “before” peak into our client’s new house where we’ll be updating the kitchen and bathrooms before they move in.

We’ll be breaking ground on a couple of additions later this year.  One of those projects (on the left) was designed by 510 Architects and is going to be a really eye-catching modern addition to this home. The other addition project  on the books is in Church Hill (on the right), where we’ll be working with Bella Designs Studio.

We’re also designing an update to a small ranch house for a growing family. This house is a great reminder that if you love where you live, you don’t have to move as your family grows! There’s almost always some way to expand and make the most of your home. Finally, one of our past clients has asked us to return to do some improvements on the exterior of their home. For us, sometimes the design / build process is “drawing” in full-scale with orange duct tape!

In the Works

We’ve been keeping you updated with our West End addition and we’re putting the finishing touches on now. We’ll continue to share the final details in the weeks ahead.

Our collaboration with Spruce RVA is making great progress as they are making quick work on framing out this addition.

We love how much collaboration we’ve been able to have in the past year and are looking forward to new partnerships in 2018!

New People

We’ve added some great carpenters over the past year and we’ll be sharing about those teammates in the months ahead.  Over the past few years we have grown to an average of 6-8 employees. This team size is perfect for the projects we take on and the level of attention we like to give each of our clients. We plan to continue at this size, so while we will pursue growth in the types of projects we take on, our team size will likely to stay the same this year and we are just fine with that!

Building Our Skills

We are always trying to learn and improve on our mission to build sustainably. Looking forward to reading this book and integrating even more sustainable practices into our work.

We use SketchUp for all of our design work and drawings. Once again, continual improvement is on our to-do list, and we are looking forward to this year’s 3D Basecamp as the previous ones we’ve attended have been a great source of inspiration and knowledge. It doesn’t hurt that it’s in Palm Spring either . . .

Turning Ten

Finally, this summer will mark RIC design build’s 10th year of business! It’s crazy to look back and see how far we’ve come, the projects we’ve had the pleasure of working on, and the people we’ve met along the way. We have certainly enjoyed every moment and are looking forward to another amazing ten years.

Happy New Year!
