2021: Mid-Year Update

2021 has been a busy year thus far, with several new projects getting started and several more on the horizon.

To keep up with the work, our team has expanded and is now the largest it has ever been. This means more talent, more skills, and more awesome projects!

Dwell+ Feature

We were so excited to have our midcentury modern whole home renovation project with our clients, the Villacarillos, featured in Dwell!

We especially love that this feature calls out Alan McCullough and the homage paid to the home’s era. You can read all about the process from beginning to end in our four-part blog series we did last year.

Under Construction

Spanish Colonial Addition & Renovation

This 106 year old Spanish Colonial home is getting a massive makeover, with an interior renovation in the main house, major renovations to the original carriage house, a new two-story addition and new landscaping. We broke ground early this year and are now moving into the finish work phase. The new build includes elements of the historic house such as a stucco exterior as well as repairs to the original structure. As always, we’re doing our best to respect the home’s era, while giving its current owners the space and functionality they need.

Grace Street Kitchen Renovation

We are nearing the finish line of this project that included a full demolition of the interior, down to the studs. The kitchen will have all new cabinets, countertops, wood flooring and finishes. The new design highlights the two large windows on the back of the house. The piece de resistance is the black and gray glazed tile backsplash between the windows which will house the range and range hood.

High Point - West End location!

Although COVID and the usual building permit delays have caused this project to go a little slower than anticipated, we are now off and running on the newest High Point Barber Shop location in the West End. We’re excited to help create the experience they’ve honed so well in their other locations, including the one in Scott’s Addition that we worked on alongside the design team at Campfire & Co. and who we’ll be working with again on this space.

This project was also highlighted in a recent Richmond BizSense article which talks more about the location and potential future locations!

Park Ave Garage Rebuild and Roof Deck

This attached garage, added to the original 1910 house shortly after its original construction, was in very poor condition. The garage roof had been leaking for years which caused so much damage that it could not be repaired and warranted a rebuild. We removed the existing roof deck, demolished the deteriorating roof, installed new structural beams and steel, poured a new concrete slab and made a lot of repairs to the masonry.  All of this rebuild allowed for a new, modern roof deck with Ipe wood and steel railings.  City living at its finest!

Screen Porch Conversion

The homeowners of this 1945 Colonial called us to turn their under-used screen porch that had been added in 2009 into a living room space. Using the existing roof and floor system, we built new walls using mostly windows, which provide lots of light and that outside experience. This finished room is positioned right alongside their kitchen and with a new fireplace, it’s now a very-much-used, four season space.

Grove Ave Interior Renovation

This whole home renovation will include a new kitchen, new bathrooms and even an attic turned home office. While it is still very much in the works, we’re excited about how it’s going to turn out, especially in the kitchen. As with a lot of our work, the final finishes will be a blend of historic elements from the house with new modern details.

Westover Hills Mid-Century

This home was designed by Richmond architect Thomas Gresham in 1963. Our renovation will include two bathrooms that will include period appropriate details such as terrazzo floor tiles, ceramic wall tiles with natural wood elements. It’s always our honor to work on homes with this kind of history and design, helping them evolve while staying true to their modern roots.

Beyond current projects, we have a lot of other exciting news to share about our growing team, future projects and inspirations which we’ll be sharing in future blogs, so stay tuned!
